Inspired by the characteristically red legs of the spectacled guillemot—a bird which represents Teuri Island—we opted to paint our log house lodgings in the deep “falu” red often seen on houses in Scandinavian countries.
From spring to summer, Teuri Island transforms into a paradise for birds, as droves of spectacled guillemots and rhinoceros auklets arrive to begin courting, breeding, and raising their young. It’s no wonder Teuri Island is known as Japan’s foremost “seabird sanctuary.”
Teuri Mafure is the manifestation of our earnest wish to bring this wonderful natural sight to as many people as possible! Teuri Island offers a plentitude of activities for visitors. You’ll be able to observe seabirds and other migrating birds, go cycling, fishing, and more!
We sincerely hope you enjoy your time on Teuri Island, and look forward to receiving you.
The buildings, constructed in a Scandinavian red log-house style, consist of three main areas: the “Umi no Uchūkan” building, which serves as both reception and restaurant; the main lodge housing shared toilets and showers; and five private cottages, each equipped with a bath and toilet. All buildings are connected by wooden decks, creating a unified and inviting space.
At the restaurant, guests can enjoy dishes made with ingredients sourced from Teuri Island, Haboro Town, and across Hokkaido. The main lodge also features a shared kitchen equipped with an IH stove, cooking utensils, and tableware—perfect for guests who prefer self-catering during extended stays.
A gift corner offers a variety of souvenirs inspired by Teuri Island’s iconic seabirds, such as the Common Murre, Rhinoceros Auklet, and Spectacled Guillemot.
Throughout the facility, visitors will find illustrations by picture book artist Hiroshi Abe, whose distinctive style brings to life the nesting and parenting behaviors of seabirds featured in his book Umidori no Shima. Complementing these are stunning photographs by nature photographer Takaki Terasawa, who has spent decades capturing the wild beauty of Teuri Island’s avian life. Together, these works create a space where guests can truly feel the richness of nature on “Seabird Island”—Teuri.
We offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner at our restaurant, the “Teuri Visitor Center,” which can seat up to 30. You’ll be able to choose between a-la-carte or a course meal. We make an effort to ensure most items on our menu use items produced on either Teuri Island or in Haboro Town.
